Today is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast commemorates the finding of the Cross of Jesus by St. Helena, mother of the first Christian emperor, Constantine. The cross is no longer a sign of torture but of triumph. It leads our processions and stands near the altar of Christ’s sacrifice. A symbol of death overcame death because of the perfect obedience of Jesus, who freely accepted it.

We remember and pray for those who lost their lives, were injured, and traumatized in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. We pray for those who risked their lives to save others; for those who continue to grieve, mourn, and process the tragedy; for those who have developed health conditions in the aftermath; and for peace, healing, and forgiveness.

In the liturgy, the Scriptures are proclaimed rather than read. Join us for the virtual workshop series where we will address techniques for understanding the text, identifying an intention, and conveying emotion to move beyond reading to proclaiming the Word of God. Tomorrow, September 1, is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This celebration begins the season of creation which extends until the Memorial of St. Francis on October 4 (however, this memorial is omitted this year because of the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time). Let us continue to pray for and act responsibility toward God’s gift of creation which we have been entrusted to care for.
