The Art of Bobby Whalen

Rusted Tin to Cotton Gin: A Trip on the Mississippi Blues Trail 09/12/2013

THE BLUES TRAIL: *Newsflash*
In his journey along the trail of tears, he never sought fortune, cared less about fame. An honest realist, he recognized the brutal truth when it came along and would tell it like it is. No doubt, "to make a living in Music ya gotta make sacrifices" Moe Minor often said. What if 'sacrifice' meant losing your soul in exchange for glitz and glam? He wasn't going for it, then or now or ever.

Last night I got a phone call from Bobby Whalen of Indianola, MS. We talked about Moe Minor and what a huge void his unexpected passing leaves behind. Bobby is a good friend and one of the few great Muralists of Mississippi. To memorialize his comrade, he told me he will pick up brush and paint, merging Moe's image into his existing mural dedicated to Mississippi's Unknown Blues Artists. The Indianola site is along the Blues Trail and bears a Historic Marker, placed by Sony.

A rescued soul who has now gone home, assuredly will never be lost. The only sacrifice made, is Paint from the Artist's hand. Hope to see you on the 'Blues Trail'.

Rusted Tin to Cotton Gin: A Trip on the Mississippi Blues Trail Geographic routes of discovery on the Mississippi Blues Trail are as varied and plentiful as the paths weaving through the history of the music itself—music that began as spirituals, work songs and simple narrative ballads in African American communities in the South.
