Itās been a hard, weird week, month, year, and one that has left me (Erika š) feeling paralyzed and powerless far too often. Itās so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day motion of running a store, being a mom, trying to keep it all togetherā¦but a big world will always assert itself, whether you (or I) want to engage with the worst of it or not.
Throughout our 11 years of existence, two of our core beliefs have always been that: 1) books are agents for hope, change and goodness, and always have been, and 2) third spaces are essential to the life and character of the communities in which they operate. These beliefs inform everything we do here in our little corner of this vibrant, beautiful city.
Because of these beliefs, we will remain open tomorrow, 1/30, and will be donating 20% of our sales tomorrow and through the weekend to the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR). Whether youāre looking for something special to read or just a cozy place full of like-minded people with whom to share community, weāre here for you and want to hang out with you. We also have free ICE whistles (while supplies last).
To our friends in Minnesota, Chicago and beyond who are actively protesting the injustices perpetrated by this administration, and putting their own safety at risk every day in the process: we are SO proud of you, and we stand with you in hope and solidarity, now and always. Read books, help each other whenever and however you can, and seriously:
ABOLISH. ICE.

Yes! What they said. š
The delays and damaged shipments and wrong orders and etc. have made this holiday season very challenging, for sure. Thank you so much to every one of you who asked about an order and when we told you we were still waiting, you just shrugged and said, "No worries, it'll get here when it gets here. You're doing your best." WE SO APPRECIATE YOU. Yes, the pickings are a bit slim on the shelves right now, but there are so many treasures still to be found -- and of course we're happy to help match you up with a perfect book we do have in stock. Thanks for being such a supportive community, Roscoe Village and beyond!
We are taking a brief pause from the holiday chaos to say, enjoy the browse. This year, due to several factors beyond our control (publisher consolidation, warehouse overloads, too many robots?!), deliveries are delayed more than weāve ever seen in our 11 holiday seasons of co-ownership. Orders that were supposed to arrive at the bookstore in 2 days are now taking 8, 10 days or more. Yesterday, we opened a desperately needed restock order to find that even though it was our address on the label, it was some other bookstoreās order inside! We often joke that we are out of books two days before Christmas, but this year itās painfully true. And whatās worse is that we know that all the books on your list are coming⦠sometime in January. And then after those books are here, the bills for all those books that you wanted in December will arrive. But by then Chicagoans will be hibernating, not shopping a stupendously well-stocked bookstore. So what we are asking today is if you come to the bookstore, we likely donāt have every book on your very specific list, but we do have lots of treasures. Because we are a mission-driven feminist bookstore, every book on our shelves has been carefully curated for you to discover. So please stop by and, as Lynn always says, enjoy the browse.
With love,
Lynn & Sarah
