I miss this guy. He was a vet. He was Grampa, Papa, Dad, Ol’ Man, Gramps. His name was Igor (John) Dmytrenko and I’m honored to have been his son in law. He was a true champion of the underdog. Born in a WW2 work camp, his family immigrated to the USA and he forged his way through life with a huge heart and a passion for engineering. He could fix just about anything (on his own time). He instilled in me a thick layer of compassion which I regard as one my most fundamental pillars. His strong work ethic and sense of adventure rubbed off on Julie and me and was a huge part of what made ApriL 7s possible 21 years ago. Even in his last months when his vision was failing he kept insisting on guiding me through changing an electrical outlet. He never stopped giving. I am grateful to have been his Guardian on the Lake County Honor Flight to D.C. that we took this past October where he, along with other veterans visited and reflected on the war memorials dedicated to their sacrifice. “It was a trip of a lifetime” he said. Close family even joined us for a bit of the trip and he was proud to introduce his granddaughter and grandsons to his fellow veterans. Thought the last year had been increasingly difficult for John, health wise, this trip invigorated him so much that he seemed like he was in his twenties again. Up at the crack of dawn, banging on my door one and a half hours too early for the hotel breakfast, talking up a storm, full speed ahead (in a wheel chair 😉), making friends, making jokes, healing wounds and closing chapters.
John, thank you for showing me how to be a good human. I’ll never forget you, old man. I miss you.
