Saturday Writing Workshops

At 5:30 this morning, I'll be on the road with my Saturday Writing Program students. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Teen Writing Conference here we come.

Drove to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to deliver the registrations for the Teen Writing Conference. Saturday Writing Program started later than usual this year but we are not foregoing our Whitewater tradition. Thanks kids for submitting!

Saturday Writing Program is picking up steam. Let's get moving!

Hey you poetry heads, performers and slammists, mystery writers, and fictionistas! Come on out 10:30am to 12:30pm Saturdays to the Saturday Writing Program. We are located at 1180 N. Milwaukee on the second floor. Climb the stairs to work on your writing, connect with other young writers, find writing mentors, and beef up your college applications with our contests, publication opportunities, and conferences. There is only one class meeting and it's a general creative writing class. There are mystery writers, poets, playwrights/dramatists, and one undecided. We will be blogging, entering contests, learning how to publish our own chapbooks as well as reading and writing all kinds of relevant literature.

We meet from 10:30am to 12:30pm but you know me I'll come in earlier and stay later if the muse or need arises.

Krista's class is packed and their chapbooks are going to be off the hook. Ciara's class is bringing some wisdom to blogging. Dan Sullivan subbed for JW Baz and rocked the class so well that students requested that he teach a class with us. Roger blew the minds of his class with some Robert Hayden and Lil Wayne. Come out on June 4th, 12:30 and 1:30pm to Display Day and see the work YCA have been creating.

We began the 3rd Trimester of SWP! Roger's class From Classics to HipHop poetry started off with Derrick Walcott battling Notorious B.I.G. Intro to Story Slam taught by JW Baz was filled with phat stories and superkids! Krista Franklin's Chapbook/Portfolio class was so hot it stayed late and then went to Zine Fest. Ciara Miller blew the door to real talk wide open with her reading on Chris Brown by Kevin Powell.

Display day is March 12th from 11:00am to 12:30pm. Come on out and see what the Intro to Science Fiction, Poetry from around the World, The Art Words Make: Collage poetry classes have been doing for the last ten weeks. You can also sign up for the third trimester classes there. For those who attend 2 out of 3 trimesters you get a certificate at the June 9th graduation and awards ceremony!

Saturday Writing Program started this past Saturday, January 8th. We've got some wonderful new students representing Chicago Talent Academy, Jones, Payton, Ogden, Cristo Rey, and Clemente!
