In the 1980s and 1990s, rave culture grew out of underground electronic music scenes in places like Chicago, Detroit, and the UK. Early raves were all-night warehouse or field parties centered around house, techno, acid house, and later hardcore electronic music. They emphasized freedom, dancing, DIY culture, and community.

By the early–mid 1990s, a harder, faster style called Gabber (or gabba) exploded in Rotterdam. Gabber featured extremely fast BPMs (160–220+), distorted kick drums, aggressive energy, shaved-head fashion, tracksuits, and intense dance styles like hakken. It became a major Dutch youth subculture tied to hardcore techno.
