While this year’s World Cup may have come to an end, the connections it creates last far beyond the tournament.
Every match brought together people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds, reminding us that sport has the power to transcend borders and spark meaningful conversations. Often described as a universal language, sports allow people from all around the world to come together and celebrate and experience the same emotions, whether it’s the satisfaction of victory or the disappointment of defeat. In the end, sports diplomacy is about turning a shared love for a game into an opportunity for mutual understanding and long-lasting connections.

Today, we honor the legacy of a leader who advocated for justice and transformed the lives of many. Mandela believed in the power of bringing people together.
Here in Chicago, his message reminds us that meaningful change begins with small actions. His commitment to service and mutual understanding reflects the values of citizen diplomacy, showing how conversation, kindness, and curiosity can create stronger and more inclusive communities.
May his well-known words “it always seems impossible until it’s done” serve as inspiration to keep creating more opportunities for all.
