A study worth sitting with: the mere presence of a phone — turned off, face down, never touched — lowers the quality of a conversation.
Not a notification. Not a glance. Just the presence of the device.
Researchers at the University for Continuing Education Krems found that limiting smartphone use to under two hours a day for three weeks produced measurable improvements in wellbeing. A broader review across 21 studies and 3,600+ participants found the same pattern: less screen time correlates with better focus, stronger relationships, and lower anxiety — especially for people who started out most overwhelmed.
For those of us building brands, leading teams, or just trying to be present with the people in front of us, this isn’t abstract. It’s operational. Attention is the resource we manage least intentionally and protect least often.
