LAST WEEKEND was a -cracklin’ with Art and Design’s raku firings. Under Chad and Tom’s expert guidance, we glazed bisqueware and fired it until it was red-hot, then removed it from the kiln into a can of combustible paper and sawdust. By fiddling with the lid, one can control the oxygen, which controls the combustion, which controls the color. Artist Dawn Liddi brought in feathers to get beautiful designs and textures. Even students from the science department got in on the fun—ceramics is a chemical thang, don’t you know?
A good time was had by all, and we came away smelling smoky, but laden with lovely raku ware. Thanks Tom and Chad for hosting! Stay tuned for the next firing adventure!
