New Treatment Available for Neuropathy
NEW in our office - for our patients who are currently living with Neuropathy, Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be helpful. TMS, a new addition to Chicago Neurological Services, is a non-invasive in-office procedure that involves using magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. While TMS is not typically used as a direct treatment for neuropathy itself, it can be beneficial for certain neuropathy-related symptoms or comorbid conditions:
Pain Management: Neuropathy often leads to chronic pain, which can be challenging to manage with traditional treatments. TMS has shown promise in managing various types of chronic pain, including neuropathic pain. By targeting specific areas of the brain involved in pain processing, TMS can help alleviate pain symptoms in some individuals with neuropathy.
Depression and Anxiety: Neuropathy can significantly impact a person's quality of life and mental well-being, leading to depression and anxiety in some cases. TMS has been FDA-approved for the treatment of depression that does not respond to other therapies. By stimulating areas of the brain associated with mood regulation, TMS can help improve symptoms of depression and anxiety in individuals with neuropathy.
Nerve Regeneration: While TMS itself does not directly promote nerve regeneration, some research suggests that it may have neuroprotective effects and enhance neuroplasticity. By stimulating neural activity in specific brain regions, TMS may indirectly support nerve regeneration processes in individuals with neuropathy, potentially leading to improved nerve function over time.
Modulation of Central Sensitization: Neuropathy can lead to central sensitization, a process where the central nervous system becomes hypersensitive to pain signals. TMS can help modulate abnormal neural activity associated with central sensitization, thereby reducing pain perception and improving pain tolerance in individuals with neuropathy.
Combined Therapy Approach: At Chicago Neurological Services, TMS is often used as part of a comprehensive treatment approach for neuropathy, alongside other interventions such as medication, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications - as recommended by Dr Cohen and the medical team. By incorporating TMS into a multidisciplinary treatment plan, various aspects of neuropathy can be addressed, including pain, mood disturbances, and functional impairment.
It's important to note that while TMS can be beneficial for some individuals with neuropathy, its effectiveness may vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of neuropathic symptoms.

Experience TMS:
Your path to relief starts here. If you or someone you know is living with Depression or OCD, reach out to us. A consultation with Dr. Cohen will determine the suitability of TMS therapy and once deemed appropriate, treatment sessions can be started. During a TMS session, patients simply relax in a comfortable chair while a small, electromagnetic coil is placed against their scalp. The device delivers magnetic pulses to stimulate the targeted brain regions, a process that typically takes less than an hour per session.
TMS therapy overview:
TMS therapy utilizes magnetic fields to stimulate specific areas of the brain known to be under active in depression and overactive in OCD. By modulating neural activity in these regions, TMS helps restore balance and alleviate symptoms. The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and does not require anesthesia, making it suitable for a wide range of individuals.
One of the key advantages of TMS therapy is its minimal side effects compared to traditional treatments. While medications can often cause unwanted side effects such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, or drowsiness, TMS therapy typically only entails mild scalp discomfort or headache during or after treatment sessions. This makes it an appealing option for those who may have experienced intolerable side effects with other treatments.
Moreover, TMS therapy offers another significant benefit – its effectiveness. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy of TMS in reducing symptoms of depression and OCD, even in individuals who have not responded well to other treatments. For many patients, TMS therapy has been a game-changer, providing relief when all else seemed to fail.
