Another perspective on the portrayals of women in art, here are some details from beloved Armenian painter Martiros Saryan's works, rich with color and light. Mariam Aslamazyan is one of our favorite painters, and the Armenian city of Gyumri has a whole museum dedicated to her works and those of her sister, the painter Eranuhi Aslamazyan. Her paintings of women have the powerful sense of natural beauty, identity, agency and strength that male painters so often miss. These are women through a woman's eyes and they radiate that connection. If you're lucky enough to be in Gyumri, you can visit the Aslamazyan sisters museum and then stop next door at Aregak for coffee and pastries made by a talented group of young bakers.
