Hi all, I'm getting ready for the Printer's Row Art Fest in Chicago this weekend (August 10-11). Also, I've been meaning to let you know that I updated my website, so some of my new work can also be found there: https://studiokeating.com/

This painting is entitled "Buoy" and the color shifts and changes. Mixed media on canvas, 12x12 inches.

Besides being very difficult to photograph due to its large size (36 x 36 inches), this painting I'm just finishing up is also a bit of a departure from my recent work because it is clearly representational. However, it is all part of my continuing exploration of paint, color temperature, brightness versus darkness, and contrasting line work. I've included the second photo so you can see the surface up close.

I'm playing around with gold leafing again on some paintings. Here's a detail of a work in progress. I love how the metallic leafing changes value depending on the light!

Join me along with artist Dorothy Graden on Thursday, December 7th at the Chicago Cultural Center from 3-4pm. We will both be presenting artist talks as part of the Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists group show, "Later Impressions." I will be sharing my mark-making journey, my explorations combining mixed media with acrylics, and how I achieve surfaces that challenge preconceptions about acrylic paintings.

I'm so excited! Yesterday I was awarded "Best in Show" at the Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists group show 'Later Impressions'. It's running through January 5, 2025 at the Chicago Cultural Center on Michigan Ave. Stop by and check it out you are downtown. There are multiple exhibition spaces, lots of art to see and it's free admission.

Some small mixed media works on canvas. "Groundwork," and "Substrate," both 8 x 10 inches. In the first one I've sewn three rusty nails onto the canvas using thin brass wire... They will continue to rust.

It was a bit of a "one step forward, two steps back process on completing this painting because I was very particular about how I wanted the final surface to look and feel like wax. "Celestial / Terrestrial" is a good sized painting at 36x36 inches and I am absolutely getting lost in the shades of blue and spaciousness of it while it hangs in my dining room.
