British counter-terrorism police are investigating an incident near a base used by the United States air force after arresting five men on suspicion of "preparing a terrorist act".

Armed officers detained the group in the early hours of Sunday morning after a call to emergency services about three "suspicious vehicles which appeared to be travelling towards the air base", London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Some 85 households in the nearby village of Whelford were advised to evacuate, and army bomb disposal experts were called in to examine three large white vans stopped on a rural road.

US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting in the Middle East.

Gunmen opened fire on an ambulance attending the scene of a su***de bomb attack at a roadside police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan that killed at least 12 people on Saturday and wounded about 35 others, officials said.

The attack involving an explosives-laden vehicle occurred in Dera Ismail Khan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Bilal Faizi, a spokesman for the provincial emergency service. Local police chief Safdar Baloch said most of those killed and wounded were security personnel and passersby
