Today marks the beginning of , which was established in 1982 to bring together the entire book community in shared support of the freedom to read. We wish to highlight Art Spiegelman’s “Maus.” While the author was honored in 2022 with the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters by the United States’ National Book Foundation, “Maus” is a frequent target of censorship.

A brutally moving work of art—widely hailed as the greatest graphic novel ever written—“Maus” recounts the chilling experiences of the author’s father during the Holocaust, with Jews drawn as wide-eyed mice and N***s as menacing cats. “Maus” is a haunting tale within a tale, weaving the author’s account of his tortured relationship with his aging father into an astonishing retelling of one of history’s most unspeakable tragedies. It is an unforgettable story of survival and a disarming look at the legacy of trauma.

We just launched our Library Explorer summer reading program! 🔍☀️📚

Kids ages 5-12 can become Little Free Library Explorers by visiting 10 libraries, reading 10 books (or for 10 hours), and keeping track of it all in their Explorer Field Guide!

The Field Guide is available for purchase or free download. (Psst! If you puchase your Field Guide, you'll also receive a Reading Buddy stuffed animal and Explorer tee!) https://lflib.org/library-explorer-field-guide
