Scientists have identified fossilized jawbones belonging to a massive octopus-like predator that may have ruled the oceans 72 million years ago. Described in a recent study, the species, named Nanaimoteuthis haggarti, is believed to have reached lengths of up to 62 feet, making it a contender for the largest invertebrate ever discovered. Scientists say the discovery points to a more diverse and complex prehistoric ocean ecosystem than previously understood.
