" Laughter isn’t even the other side of tears. It is tears turned inside out. Truly the suffering is great, here on earth. We blunder along, shredded by our mistakes, bludgeoned by our faults. Nehemiah Rising recently attended one of our partners, The Love, Unity, and Values (LUV) Institute Parade of Hearts Wonderful unveiling. The Chicago non-profit held the event in the Heart of the Bronzeville community at Mandrake,38th & Cottage Grove.

The unveiling displayed a new series of neighborhood heart art installations, commemorating the collective struggles of the past year and uplifting communities through Restorative Justice as a means of societal healing. These amazing hearts are designed by local phenomenal artists who come from and are involved in the community.

These public art hearts have been installed in several communities where Chicagoans are experiencing the greatest hardship. "Historically, public art projects are usually downtown, "said Cozette Nazon-Wilburn, the LUV Institute's founder and executive director. "The hope is that through healing and restorative justice the hearts represent change and transformation in communities across Chicago."

Chicago Community Bond Fund is heartbroken to share that Malik Alim passed away this weekend.

Malik joined CCBF's staff in December 2019 and quickly became a champion for the movement to end to money bond in Illinois. He worked as CCBF’s Advocate and represented the organization in many campaigns, such as the Budget for Black Lives. Malik’s previous role at CCBF was Campaign Coordinator for the Coalition to End Money Bond, in which he played an instrumental role in the passage of the Pretrial Fairness Act.

Today, you can join the Collective in honoring Malik’s life at the Breathing Room Gardens and Farm at 1434 W. 51st Street, from 2pm to 4pm. More information about Malik’s memorial and other community gatherings will be shared as soon as it is available.

CCBF’s community holds Malik’s children, partner, and family in our hearts and prayers. May his memory be a blessing to us all.
