***Disclaimer*** NO ONE here at Level Up 2 Success would advise you or a client not to pay an account you legally owe and it is to your discretion of what you want to do when an account is “deleted” We are only informing you of what could happen if you pay while it is still reporting negatively.

These are for accounts that have passed the “late status” and are now in collection, charged off, repossession etc. These typically happens around 6 months of consecutive nonpayments but honestly can happen at any moment after non payments.

The act of paying a negative and/or closed account will erase the balance but not the negative history of the account. The negative history is what is hurting you when the account is closed but the balance. Balances are only a factor on open account. Also paying on a closed account can reset the DOLA (Date of Last Activity) which add an additional 7 years from the last payment received and add more time to the statue of limitation (which is the time in which a creditor that is owed can legally sue you. Check your state for their statue limits.

So when paying off a collection if you can’t get a pay to delete do a settlement for less than the amount owed. It does not matter if the collection says paid or settled the derogatory item is there and affecting your credit score. Just because you paid a collection does not mean that it will make your score better. Paid items that are left on you report still show the derogatory remarks. Getting the items removed will increase your scores and make for a cleaner report that present and future creditors see!
