Barbara Smith is a wonder in the Wyoming Poetry community, and we hope you get the chance to see her LIVE tomorrow at the Come Spring Again Poetry Gathering!

She has been the recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award in 2006, the Neltje Blanchan award for
Nature Writing, a Wyoming Arts Council Literary Fellowship, and a writing residency at Ucross
Foundation. Her book of poetry, 'Putting a Name on It', won the first-place award for poetry
from the Wyoming Historical Society in 2023.

The poet grew up around North Dakota and Montana among an extended family of Norwegian
immigrants and others who made their way across the world, surviving and thriving together.
After moving west to Montana and attending college there and in South Dakota, She began a
38-year teaching career at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs, Wyoming,
where she and her husband Leonard raised their family and continue to live. She retired in 2007
and currently teaches a memoir writing course in the community for the college.
