World Book Capital(English) 03/02/2024

I had not heard of UNESCO's World Book Capital initiative -- need to learn more! Here's a lovely book for children that talks about the initiative and about Sharjah (UAE's) participation.

World Book Capital(English) Imagine a city unlike any other. Where people ask, “What do you read?”, instead of “How are you?” In a simple and smooth style, this book focuses on the significance of books and the importance of promoting a culture of reading everywhere for the fun and knowledge it entails. It highlights t...

The text of the book " Try, you Can" that has been chosen as outstanding for the 2023 IBBY Selection of Outstanding Books for ."Young People with Disabilities !

Try, you can
Written by Nabila Espanioly
Translated by Nabila Espanioly
Illustrated by Abdulla Qawariq

I came to the world like every child
When I first heard my mother’s voice and smelled her odor I smiled at her
And when my father hugged me I became relaxed and smiled
With every sound, I reacted
With every smell, I moved
And I became aware of who is near me from their voice and their smell or the sound of their movement
At the beginning, no one knew that I couldn’t see anything
Until I began to crawl and bumped into things in the family room
My mum and dad had to rearrange the house to be safe and didn’t for one day prevent me from discovering
They rearranged the house and supported me
And with every challenge I faced in life, they were by my side and we found solutions
They encouraged me to do what I wanted by myself, but I never once felt alone
And I asked for help when I needed it
They surrounded me with a safe environment and love
And their reaction was always try, you can, we are here when you need us,
And one day when I was holding my stick, wearing my mask, and going to school, and paying attention to everything on the road
A man met me and asked me where I was going
I answered to school
He said who are your parents? Why are they leaving you to go to school on your own? Do they have no responsibility? Aren’t they afraid for you?
I asked him, and you were are you going, and do you need help?
He said how did you know?
I said because if you were from the town people, you would know me and know that I not only go to the school by myself, I also go to the choir by myself, and I climb the stage by myself.
In fact, he said, I am looking for the town club
So I said slow down, I will guide you to the easiest way to reach the club
You walk twenty steps forward and then turn right and walk thirty steps and turn left again and walk ten steps and you will be in front of the club
I left him confused and continued on my way
And whoever passed by me, saw a big smile on my face.

#WorldKidLit Wednesday: Book of Questions 06/08/2022

“If you are looking for some unconventional questions to pose to a child in your life, consider the new picture book adaptation of Pablo Neruda’s Book of Questions. The list of 163 books nominated for the 2022 IBBY Honour List has been released!

See the full list of titles and nominees: https://www.ibby.org/awards-activities/awards/ibby-honour-list/ibby-honour-list-2022

Every two years, the IBBY Honour List catalogue is published in English and comprises recently published books from IBBY member countries. These books are considered to be outstanding for the quality of writing, illustration and translation. Important considerations in selecting the Honour List titles are that the books represent the best in children's literature from each country, and that the books are recommended as suitable for publication throughout the world. In this way, the Honour List supports IBBY’s objective of encouraging international understanding through children’s literature.

Over 2,000 copies of the 2022 IBBY Honour List catalogue will be distributed worldwide after the presentation of the selection in September at the 38th IBBY World Congress in Putrajaya, Malaysia (www.ibbycongress2022.org)
