Love Without Fighting Is Not Real Love
Americans say “I love you” all the time, a little bit too much perhaps. They say it for instance to their kids when the child is about to leave the house to go to school, and the child dutifully repeats it back to them. (Or not, if the teenager is for some reason again pi**ed at her father again). It is really no big deal, part of the all-important small talk in America....

How to Be Born in at Least Three Places at the Same Time
Unsurprisingly, like most people, I was born only once. But perhaps unlike most people, I was born in three places at the same time and I have the paperwork, specifically three different birth certificates, to prove it! How did I pull off something like that, you might ask. Well, I did not do anything at all to accomplish such a feat, it just happened to me by the accident of birth, one might say....

The Pleasure of Reading
Reading gives me a pleasure that is not comparable to anything else, an enormous pleasure that I have been enjoying since I was about 6 or 7 years old. I still remember how wonderful it felt when I read my first “book”, written for little children. I remember the title, it was called in Czech “My First Wristwatch”, though I don’t remember much else about it....

“If I Could Do What You Are Doing Now, I Would Do It in a Heartbeat”
I could not go to my original home for a long time, for about 9 years. First in the eighties when I lived in Germany between 1981-82, and then when I lived in California in the eighties. That was because I escaped from my home country when I got tired of the idiocy of the regime, illegally according to communist laws back then, and since the comrades really didn’t like it when people did not return obediently back home to continue living behind a border surrounded by barbed wire, they sentenced me to a year and half for this major crime....

Some More San Francisco Memories from the Eighties
Some More San Francisco Memories from the Eighties I used to live in the city of San Francisco between 1982-92. At first, I worked for 3 years as a so- called multilingual Visitor Services Representative helping visitors from US and abroad, mostly Europe and Japan, to enjoy their stay and spend their money in San Francisco and California. I was able to land this job, my first one in America, within a few weeks after arriving from Germany because I was fluent in several European languages and Japanese....

Mulling Over the Big Decisions of My Life
Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. Soren Kierkegaard, Danish theologian and philosopher I was watching a film the other day, and one of the main protagonists in the film said”: Look, lady, the biggest regret of my life is that” … and so on. Something about not having done the right thing, which might have saved somebody’s life....

I Never Wanted to Have Children
I Never Wanted to Have Children The truth is, I never wanted to have children. I was afraid that I would not be able to handle the responsibilities. After all, I was a new immigrant to America, living in San Francisco, one of the most expensive cities in the world. My future, written in the stars, was quite uncertain at that point....

I Chose Aging in Europe Instead of in America
Time, the moving image of eternity, oscillates above you like a pendulum of death, and soon it will catch up with you. From the book Tisíc očí (Thousand Eyes) by Ivan Fíla We of course start aging from the moment when we are born, once we are breathing on our own and then start crying. Then the fairy tale of youth comes for most of us, followed by the sobering reality of middle age when we mostly live to pay our bills....

The Unfathomable Importance of Good and Bad Luck and Ignored Omens in Our Life
One important thing we all need in our life and cannot really plan or count on, is luck. That is probably why most people, including myself, believe in all kinds of mostly innocuous rules and superstitions, such as believing in lucky and unlucky numbers Although I was born in Central Europe and lived there until I was 29, first in Czechoslovakia and then in Germany, at this point in my life (I am 73), I can still say that I spent most of my life away from the continent of my birthplace, namely 37 years, and most of it, or 34 years, in the United States....
