Happy Pride Month from Cherokee Historical Association!

Indigenous communities across North America have historically recognized and accepted LGBTQIA2S+ identities. Today, the Indigenous term most commonly used is "two-spirit," but most tribes have specific terms in their own languages for the social and spiritual roles that two-spirit individuals fill.

We proudly support our LGBTQIA2S+ staff and community members and wish you all a Happy Pride! ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷🖤🤍🤎

The Beaver Dance demonstrated at Oconaluftee Indian Village living history museum in Cherokee, NC. A fan favorite social dance, hard to film but so fun to watch

The dancers imitate hunting the beaver while two dancers at the front control a stuffed beaver on a string. The dancers love to get the audience involved while they’re searching all around the square grounds on their beaver hunt. And the two with the strings love to make it hard for their friends to get the beaver

Remember, the dances we demonstrate at Oconaluftee Indian Village are Cherokee social dances. They are not sacred or ceremonial dances which is why they can be shown to the public. They are meant to be fun for the community. They’re also not the powwow style dances you may be familiar with, as those are more modern and are done today for competition
