This afternoon I did something I thought I would never do: I resigned from the local musicians’ union (that’s AFM Local 80).
If you’re in the non-union Chattanooga music community and know me as literally the last person trying to talk you out of giving up hope on the union, I’m extremely stubborn and will not admit I was wrong and IN FACT I’m saying still don’t give up yet. If you are already in the union, you know exactly why I’m leaving and probably told me to give up a long time ago; on that subject (which I’m keeping vague on purpose because we don’t mud-sling here), you were right and I was wrong, and I hate admitting it.
I intend to rejoin the Local 80 when the leadership has changed enough that I don’t have to worry about priorities being somewhere outside of ‘gainful employment for musicians of all disciplines.’ It’s polyannic, of course, but if that is not a priority then we backslide.
If you’re in the union and thinking of also resigning or letting your membership expire, I’m asking you not to for this reason: there will be a new election for president in April, hopefully not between two literal Beethoven’s 5th rehearsals in the basement of Memorial, and you may have up to three challenging candidates. I’d ask that you make your vote count, especially since mine no longer does. This city’s arts community is actively trying to end childish grudges in 2026 so that we can figure out how we grow alongside the city itself, and I would not hesitate to say anyone who still holds a childish grudge, especially publicly, has no business holding a position of power.
I’m still here, getting people to talk to each other and have difficult conversations. We’re still here as a community. Very little changes, except my love for collective action for the better, and for any one of you who read this to the end.
Musically y’alls,
G
