Following the Cinematic Breadcrumbs

From a very early age I’ve been fascinated by film.

After being bitten by the ‘Star Wars bug,’ in high school I took the closest most available logical step by enrolling in theater classes (the only boy in my class) and having parts in the yearly school musicals.

In college I studied mass communication -- radio & television broadcasting were my hands-on go-to, and I worked for several years in each.

I went away to film school in Florida (under what I like to call the ‘Walt Disney World Work-Study Program’) and as part of the Valencia Film Program learned and practiced every particular aspect to making a film: script writing & analysis, casting & directing, cinematography & editing.

I worked in positions ranging from humble Production Assistant to Set Lighting Technician and Production Designer.

But still my teachers kept telling me:

“Kris -- I really enjoy your writing -- you need to be a writer.”

So, here I am -- taking all of that ‘practical film knowledge’ and applying it as a film historian in the literary genre known as creative nonfiction.

My Current Project

Since the late 1970s I have been something more than a fan of Nicolas Roeg’s 1976 marooned alien parable, The Man Who Fell to Earth starring David Bowie.

It is a film not easily forgotten, and long after I’d left the theater there were moments that I couldn’t get out of my head. There was something about the film which impacted me to the core, and it has only been in researching and writing my forthcoming book that I was able to identify the film’s means of touching me so deeply.

In the wake of the passing David Bowie in January of 2016 I am currently in the process of serializing excerpts from my book on Medium.com.
