Constructed Awareness® (CA) is a psychotherapy model that helps clients understand themselves and connect more deeply with their experience by enhancing awareness of thoughts, sensations, and external perceptions.
Is happiness really a choice?
Many people have heard the phrase, "Happiness is a choice." But what if emotions aren't something we choose at all?
In this video, Tyler Orr explores why he has become increasingly skeptical of the idea that emotions are under conscious control. Drawing from therapy practice, everyday experience, and what we know about the autonomic nervous system, he discusses why emotions such as anxiety, depression, fear, and sadness may be better understood as automatic responses rather than personal choices.
The video also introduces a core principle of Constructed Awareness (CA): bringing awareness to an experience changes the experience.

Have you ever been in an argument with your partner and felt like you were living in two completely different worlds?
In this brief lesson, Tyler Orr, LPC, introduces the foundational principles of Constructed Awareness (CA) and explains how thoughts, sensations, and external experience shape the way we relate to ourselves and others.
Using a personal story from his own marriage, Tyler explores how different orientations can create relational misunderstandings and how learning to understand each other's experience can lead to deeper communication and connection.

Is Constructed Awareness (CA) EMDR?
In this video, Tyler Orr, creator of Constructed Awareness®, addresses a common question about the relationship between CA and EMDR.
He explains how the original ideas behind CA emerged from his work as an EMDR therapist, trainer, and EMDRIA-approved consultant, while also describing the key ways Constructed Awareness differs from EMDR as a distinct psychotherapy model.

"What are you noticing now?"
For many clients, this can be one of the most difficult questions to answer during EMDR processing.
Constructed Awareness® explores how thoughts, sensations, and external experience shape awareness and influence the therapeutic process.
Join Tyler Orr, LPC/MHSP, NCC for a two-day EMDRIA-approved webinar exploring how awareness-based approaches can support all phases of EMDR.

In therapy, awareness often changes the client's relationship to experience before anything else changes.
A thought becomes visible.
A sensation becomes easier to remain with.
An experience begins to unfold in a different way.
This month's Constructed Awareness® Lunch & Learn explores the first principle of CA: bringing awareness to experience changes experience.
Join Tyler Orr, LPC, NCC and Stephanie Levin, LCMHC for a free conversation exploring how awareness influences emotional experience, shapes perception, and supports therapeutic change.

Many therapists spend their days helping others make sense of experience.
The work is deeply relational, yet many therapists have few opportunities to openly explore their own experience of clinical work with peers.
The Constructed Awareness® Monthly Consultation Group offers a supportive space for consultation, reflection, and continued professional development through awareness-based dialogue and experiential learning.
Open to all therapists.

Many meaningful shifts in therapy begin with awareness.
Constructed Awareness® explores how experience is shaped through thoughts, sensations, and the external environment.
As these experiences are observed more clearly, clients often begin relating differently to what they are experiencing. This can open new possibilities for regulation, insight, and therapeutic change.

Many therapists notice that something shifts when clients begin observing their experience more clearly.
A thought becomes easier to see.
A sensation becomes easier to stay with.
An experience that once felt automatic begins to unfold in a new way.
Constructed Awareness® begins with a simple observation. Awareness changes experience.
Join Tyler Orr, LPC, NCC and Becky Mangasarian, LCMHC for a free Lunch & Learn exploring the three foundational principles of Constructed Awareness® and how they can support therapeutic work.

Constructed Awareness® explores how conscious experience is shaped through the ongoing interaction of thoughts, sensations, and the external environment.
As awareness of these experiences deepens, clients often begin relating differently to what they are experiencing, opening new possibilities for regulation and change.

Meaningful conversations continue to emerge around the relationship between awareness, emotion, and therapeutic change.
We were grateful to present at the LPCA of Georgia 2026 Convention on integrating the Theory of Constructed Emotion into counseling practice. The discussion explored how awareness of thoughts, sensations, and external perception can shape emotional experience and support more attuned therapeutic work.
Thank you to the clinicians who joined the conversation and shared their curiosity, questions, and reflections throughout the presentation.
