I rarely miss the first ceremony of Christmas in Historic Town of Chatham each year where my family gathers with fellow townsfolk near the courthouse to sing carols, light the lanterns and tree, and toss a sprig of holly onto the burning Yule log before enjoying hot cider and ginger snaps. It's a cherished tradition we joined again last night.

Earlier this week I was welcomed by Henry County Public Schools Superintendent Amy Blake-Lewis, board members Champ Hardie and Ben Gravely, and several other dedicated professionals and students at Magna Vista High School for a brief tour and discussion. We are pictured here in the facility’s impressive greenhouse where horticulture teacher Tiffany Wilson Anderson presented me with this beautiful poinsettia grown by her students.

I was very pleased to join them that day and want to encourage others to visit the horticulture program’s open house on December 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon to support this community asset and the students who learn there.

The Virginia State Crime Commission met last week in Richmond to hear presentations on studies we had previously authorized during my tenure as Vice-Chair. Reports on two of those – intentional homicide and traffic related fatalities – can be read from the links below.

These are some of the words delivered last Friday by Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin in a heartfelt and moving tribute to God's Pit Crew here in Southside Virginia. It was an honor to join with him and First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin at the ceremony to present this great organization with the final Spirit of Virginia Award for 2023.
