Join us for the first International Neighbors Book Club! We’ll be reading We Are Displaced, a collection of stories gathered and written by Malala Yousafzai. Book club attendees can purchase their own book or pick up a copy at the International Neighbors office the week of June 22. We’ll be meeting to discuss the book on Tuesday, July 21st from 6:30-8:00pm at the International Neighbors office and will hear from Buki, a refugee from Kosovo with a truly remarkable story. The book club is open to adults and teens ages 14+. Space is limited to 25 attendees.

We are thrilled to announce that our Hello, Firsts! campaign was a wild success! 🦍🐯🦁🐘🐻

Thanks to nearly 100 Great Neighbors and an incredibly generous matching gift, we have fully funded:

A trip to the Metro Richmond Zoo on June 20 (World Refugee Day!);

A summer book club hosted by International Neighbors in July (details coming this week!);

Summer driving lessons for newcomers;

Grocery gift cards for those whose SNAP benefits have been affected in June and July;

In-home tutoring supplies for English language learners;

Overhead expenses for staffing in summertime.

Thank you for helping us celebrate the firsts that bring welcome and belonging for newcomers!

On this Memorial Day, we honor the men and women of the armed services who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and the Special Immigrant Visa holders (SIVs) who supported many of them in Iraq and Afghanistan at their own peril. We remember the sacrifice.

For 10 years, we have come alongside newcomers in all their “firsts.” 🫶

Firsts can be exhilarating and overwhelming for anyone starting over. Newcomers of all ages know the feeling well—first time on an airplane, first experiences using modern conveniences like dishwashers, thermostats and showers, first time at a grocery store, first bus route in a new city, first online school registration, first camp experience, first time swimming in a pool, first doctor’s appointment at UVA hospital, first day at a new job. The list goes on and on.

International Neighbors—and our team of amazing volunteers—is there every step of the way to help refugees and SIVs navigate all their firsts with dignity, support and celebration.

Make a gift to Hello, Firsts! today and double your impact. Link in bio.
