MIMA Music
Education With a Pulse.
We believe every individual has a wealth of untapped creative potential that is not being harnessed to maximize personal growth or community benefit. We invented a method that uses music improvisation to help people create, communicate and cultivate a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Celebrating Mima‘s 25th anniversary at the Violet Crown Theatre with a screening of the classic, W***y Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. We played live music before, and after the screening with reimagined versions from the soundtrack. We also were able to give away 25 golden tickets which equated to 25+ instruments given out for free to young potential musicians in the audience. Thanks to Bill Hudson of The Feel Good Tour who donated all of the instruments, to Violet Crown, for hosting us, and to Habitat for Humanity store for allowing us to store these instruments that we distribute through our programs. It was a lot of fun and nostalgic.

Culminating our multi-week inaugural program at Oakland School. Our Mima TAs took a three pronged approach to engaging the students. John Trossi Collaborated with the kids in lyrical songwriting, Will Johnson guided the students in constructing their own musical instruments, and Bernard Hankins and Larry Grady mentored the students in digital beat making and sample pack sound recordings. Thanks to all the Mima TAs and to Oakland Schools for creating the opportunity for very creative and rich experience. The kids made it clear, they kept asking is Mima coming back?
MIMA provides music programming in partnership with a variety of schools and community organizations across Virginia. Administrators at the Lugo-McGinness Academy, Blue Ridge Respite, and CRHA (Charlottesville, Redevelopment and Housing Authority), reflect on recent MIMA programs in the communities they serve. These programs are provided at no cost to participants, thanks to the generosity of MIMA's partners and donors.
