While our network consists of Alumni from the University of Virginia who identified as either first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI), this page is welcome to all individuals who are advocates of those identifying as FGLI while they were a student. For any questions, comments, or concerns, contact Ellie Brasacchio at [email protected]. We also encourage those who are Alumni from the University

Recent research from the National Bureau of Economic Research indicates that the majority of recent college graduates end up underemployed (in jobs that do not require a degree). These outcomes differ based on certain factors such as college major, gender, race and disability.
It did not mention first-generation status or low-income background, but recent research from the NASPA Center for First-Generation Student Success indicates that first-generation students are more likely to be underemployed than their peers, but not by much.
There seems to be a disparity not only in underemployment, but also in the industries they land in out of college compared to those of similar age without a 4-year degree, as well as by amount of pay.
