Next up for Nu Rho Psi at UVA’s black history month celebration featuring black neuroscientists we have UVA’s own Dr. Ukpong Eyo, PhD. Dr. Eyo was born in Nigeria and is interested in real time imaging of microglia during development. He is credited with uncovering a novel physical interaction between microglia and neurons, and in 2018 he started his independent lab in the Department of Neuroscience and the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG) to continue his research on microglia and the developing brain. In his free time, Dr. Eyo enjoys spending time with his wife, sons, and daughter.

Next up for Black History Month we are featuring Dr. Carl Hart from Columbia University where he is the chair of the psychology department. His research focuses on the behavioral and neuropharmacological effects of psychoactive drugs in humans and aims to develop effective treatments and influence public drug policy. “Science should be driving our drug policies, even if it makes us uncomfortable.”

Happy Black History Month! Throughout the month, Nu Rho Psi at UVA will be showcasing several black neuroscientists in the field. To start, we have Dr. Ben Carson. Dr. Carson is a retired neurosurgeon credited with being the first surgeon to successfully separate twins conjoined at the head. At age 33 he was the youngest major division director at John Hopkins University in the university’s history. He retired from neurosurgery to go into politics and was a 2016 republican primary candidate in the US elections. Let us know other black neuroscientists that you want to hear about!
Check out this blog post from Isabelle Witteveen, former Co-President of Nu Rho Psi at UVA. Witteveen discusses being a lab technician after graduation and offers advice to anyone considering a similar path.
