BREAKING: They Trusted Him With The Animals - This story just got worse.

Monroe County, Georgia - On Monday, August 3th, 2026, former Monroe County Animal Control employee Rene Carlos Santillan turned himself in on FIVE additional felony counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals.

Per the announcement from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Georgia a short time ago, further investigation revealed that on June 18th, 2026 - the same day as the 4 puppies previously reported - five more puppies were allegedly killed in the same manner inside the shelter incinerator.

That is 9 total puppies on one day.

Jail records from Monroe County show:
Name: SANTILLAN, RENE CARLOS
Arrest Date: 08/03/2026 - MONROE CO SHERIFFS OFFICE
Charge: AGGRAVATED CRUELTY TO ANIMALS 16-12-4(C) - Felony
Total Bond: $15,000.00 - Status: RELEASED per jail record (Sheriff's post states held in Monroe County Jail at time of posting)

Context: Santillan had assumed the interim director role in late April 2026 after former Director Becky Gifford was terminated, per Monroe County announcement. He was serving in that interim leadership role on June 18.
