While on tour in London last summer, I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum and stopped in the library on a whim to see if I could find some of my grandmothers artwork. When I looked her name up, I found an article she wrote called “Concentration Camps in the USA” about her experience as a 12 year old US born citizen - removed from her home with her family to live in barracks in Wyoming.

I quickly found out that she was an amazing writer. The first two paragraphs brought me to tears in this mostly empty library - she talked about telling her middle school art teacher she had to leave school, being given a prisoner number, and sleeping on sacks of hay until barracks were built to live in.

Towards the end of the article, she talks about a meeting in which “[…] Michi Weglyn ended her discussion on her book Years of Infamy by stating her belief that was not the end of concentration camps. I do hope that she is wrong. The people of the United States today would not allow it to happen ever again.”

I remember my grandmother being a brilliant woman with a boisterous laugh and looking at her artwork now always amazes me. Last two pictures are from the library where I found this article.

Until I can find a better place for it, I’ve put a link in my dropbox to read the full article.
