Cowfish has been a Charlotte favorite for years, and this renovation remains one of our favorite transformations to date. From the bold colors to the custom details, every design decision was made to reflect the playful spirit that makes Cowfish so iconic.

Banquettes should do more than fill space.
They should shape the experience. 👇
🛋️ Think beyond standard seating
Instead of treating banquettes as a basic functional element, we approach them as sculptural features integrated directly into the architecture of a space.
✨ The details matter
Channel tufting, contrast piping, stitching, curved forms—there are endless ways to customize a banquette and make it feel intentional to the brand and environment.
📐 Curves instantly elevate
Integrating softer forms into banquette design creates movement, comfort, and a more elevated spatial experience.
🏢 Function comes first
In hospitality spaces, banquettes help maximize occupancy and improve efficiency without sacrificing design impact. In residential spaces, a built-in breakfast nook can make even a compact area feel intentional.
💖 At Designbar...
We love banquettes here! At Runaway CLT, we introduced a curved banquette to anchor the space. At Cowfish CLT, horizontal channel tufting became part of the restaurant’s identity.
The best banquettes become part of the architecture itself. ✨

Lighting is the secret sauce of a space.
Let’s talk about the details people feel before they notice them. 👇
💡 Think beyond the statement pendant
Some of the most impactful lighting moments are the ones quietly built into the architecture—hidden recessed cove lighting, millwork illumination, toe-kick lighting, niches, and layered uplighting/downlighting.
✨ Design it from the beginning
At DESIGNBAR, lighting conversations start during the schematic phase. Integrating it early allows the entire space to be shaped around atmosphere, emotion, and experience.
🏢 Lighting shapes how a space feels
From banquettes to wall niches to custom millwork, thoughtful lighting can create depth, drama, warmth, and rhythm throughout a commercial environment.
🤝 It takes a team
Lighting is deeply technical, which is why the best results come from collaboration between designers, vendors, and specialists who understand both the aesthetics and the functionality behind it.
The best lighting is intentional, coordinated, and designed to evoke emotion.
What’s a lighting detail you’ve seen recently that completely transformed a space? ✨

Recently, Monika co-hosted a fundraiser at her home benefiting HUG Charlotte – Hearts United for Good. The goal was to raise $1,000, and thanks to everyone who showed up and supported, $1,300 was raised for an incredible cause. 💛
Grateful for spaces and people that bring communities together. ✨

The lowest upfront cost is rarely the smartest decision. Here’s what we’d do instead. 👇
💰 Look beyond initial cost
Value engineering often strips out materials that were intentionally selected for the project—decisions that impact performance long-term.
🔄 Replacement + maintenance add up
Lower-quality materials break. And when they do, the cost to replace them over time outweighs the initial savings.
🌱 Durability is sustainability
Materials that last reduce waste. Fewer replacements mean a more responsible approach to design.
✨ Choose materials that age well
Leather develops character. Bronze patinas beautifully.Lower-grade alternatives, such as vinyl? They tend to deteriorate, not evolve.
📈 Perceived asset value increases
Premium finishes elevate how a space is experienced, and ultimately, how it’s valued.
Design isn’t just about what you spend upfront. It’s about what it returns over time. ✨

Tile can make a space or timestamp it.
Let’s talk about how to get it right. 👇
🧱 Start with function
Before aesthetics, tile selection comes down to performance. Floor vs wall, slip resistance, durability, and even cleanability all play a role in what actually works.
🧼 Maintenance matters
Smaller tiles mean more grout, which means more upkeep. Large format options can simplify cleaning and create a more seamless look, depending on the environment.
🎯 Trend vs intention
Tile is one of the easiest ways to fall into “copy and paste” design. Trends exist for a reason, but without intention, they can quickly feel dated.
⚖️ What lasts and what fades
Bold patterns may feel exciting now, but not all will age well. Classic applications like stacked horizontal or vertical layouts have proven their longevity across decades.
Tile isn’t just a finish.It’s a long-term design decision. ✨

In honor of Earth Day yesterday, the Designbar team spent time volunteering at Innovation Barn CLT 🌎
The idea was to weave sound panels made from misprinted T-shirts—materials that would have otherwise gone to waste, now repurposed into something functional and impactful.
It’s a small reminder that thoughtful design doesn’t always start with new materials. Sometimes, it starts with rethinking what already exists. ♻️

Most spaces stop at eye level. We don’t.
Let’s talk about the fifth wall. 👇
🏢 The missed opportunity
In commercial design, ceilings are often treated as an afterthought. Left exposed, painted over, or ignored entirely.
🎨 Where design can differentiate
A treated ceiling adds drama, defines zones, and instantly elevates a space from standard to custom. Wood paneling, sculptural tiles, beams, wallpaper, and even overlooked elements can become features when approached with intention.
🔄 What we’ve done instead
At one of our downtown projects, we reimagined unattractive acoustical panels by wrapping them in string—transforming an eyesore into a feature. At Runaway Whiskey & Wine in Charlotte, a dropped ceiling element creates a bold, intentional moment that anchors and defines the space.
The best spaces don’t stop where your eyes naturally go.
They give you a reason to look up. ✨
