A lot of families assume they'll worry about college costs later. The challenge is that some of the biggest financial decisions are made long before applications are submitted. Building a thoughtful college list can make a significant difference in both options and affordability. The goal isn't simply getting in—it's finding schools that make sense academically, personally, and financially. If affordability is part of your family's college conversation, you're asking the right questions.

One of the biggest misconceptions about college planning is that students need to have everything figured out early. Incorrect! What matters most is helping them explore interests, gain experiences, and gradually build direction over time. A student who is learning about themselves is often in a better position than one who feels pressured to have all the answers.

As May comes to a close, many families start feeling like the college process is speeding up. But this is actually a very normal stage where things begin shifting from “thinking about it” to “starting to shape it.”

You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. What matters most right now is simply getting clearer about direction so the next steps feel easier, not heavier.

A lot of college stress comes from feeling like decisions have to be made quickly or perfectly. But most strong outcomes come from families who slow things down enough to understand what actually fits their student.

There is still plenty of time to build clarity, especially before senior year pressure really starts to build. You don’t need to rush—you just need a clearer direction than most families start with.

Summer is starting to feel very close, and for many families that brings a mix of relief and uncertainty at the same time. You might be wondering if enough has been done or if your student should be doing more right now.

The truth is, summer doesn’t need to be overloaded to be meaningful. What matters more is having a simple direction so your student is not just “free,” but intentionally growing in a few key areas.

The families who feel calmer in the fall usually are not the ones who did everything perfectly. They are the ones who started planning a little earlier and made thoughtful decisions along the way. Mid-May is when many parents begin realizing how quickly the next school year will move, but there is still plenty of time to approach the process intentionally. A clear plan now can make the months ahead feel far less overwhelming.

Most students do not begin this process with a perfectly clear direction, and they don’t need to. What matters most right now is giving them opportunities to explore interests, gain experiences, and start learning what fits them well.

How is summer suddenly almost here?

This is usually the point in May when families realize how quickly the college timeline starts moving. If your student still doesn’t have a clear summer plan, you are not behind. The goal isn’t to fill every moment — it’s to choose experiences that help your student grow, explore interests, and build confidence for what comes next.

From one mom to all those out there - Happy Mother’s Day! 💐

This weekend, many families are celebrating college graduations — watching students walk across the stage in caps and gowns, stepping into what comes next. And for parents of high school students, it can feel like a powerful reminder:

“This is where we’re headed.”

But also… “We still have time to get this right.”

If you’re in the middle of the college planning journey right now, I hope you take a moment to recognize this: You’re doing something important and the decisions you’re making now — the conversations, the support, the guidance — they matter more than it feels in the moment.

One day, you’ll be the parent watching your student walk across that stage.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in the middle of it. 💛
