What Do Designers Have To Do With Sexism, Plagiarism + Colonialism? 08/15/2016

With so much recent discussion about privilege, and institutionalized racism, this book sounds fascinating -- and very eye-opening. I'm adding it to my "to read" list.

What Do Designers Have To Do With Sexism, Plagiarism + Colonialism? “YOU ARE PRIVILEGED,” begins the introductory essay of Ruben Pater’s The Politics of Design, in big, shouty caps—which seems like a surefire way to turn off the design-curious reader. But shining a light on the role visual communication plays on the global stage is the crux of Pater’s latest volume,

This Documentary reveals Graphic Design before Computers made it Easy - Features 08/05/2016

This documentary sounds fascinating! When I began my career, the graphic design industry was beginning its huge shift to digital. It's interesting that, excepting the timeless principles of design and color theory, almost none of the "practical" skills I learned in school and mastered in my earliest jobs are relevant today. I was a fantastic paste-up artist, my work was very clean, detailed and precise - I learned to be very detail-oriented & focused, because if you needed to make even a small change, it was a very laborious task to make edits. And, there was a lot of math involved. Now, no way would I give up my digital tools of today to return to that painstaking work, but, it was truly "crafted by hand," and I took a pride and satisfaction in the final printed results that I no longer really feel in the quite the same way today - since the software does it all the heavy lifting now. As a designer today, I have so much less of a physical hand in it, it's mainly mental now. But, I can make a global change to a 200 page publication in a matter of milliseconds. Which makes me feel like a god.

I recently completed a logo redesign for Delta Environmental in Rochester, NY. Original logo from early 70s needed an update, but client didn't want a complete departure.
