SCRUBS Mentoring Program

Thanks to Emily Russell for dropping off cheery cards for our patients! Making cards for patients has been Emily's personal service project earning her the Governor's Award for Youth Volunteering and a Health Care Hero nomination in 2020. We love passing them out to patients to brighten their day. Card making is a welcome service project for all Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals.

While we are unable to host minors, or large numbers of students for career programs yet, conditions in the hospitals have gradually let us resume a few volunteer roles. Current available and needed roles are primarily to es**rt outpatients and assist with wheelchair transportation.

If you are over 18, vaccinated and able to serve at least one regular four-hour weekly daytime shift, feel free to email the volunteer manager below. Let us know your career interest and available weekday times for interviews.

Volunteering requires an interview, processing, HIPAA and safety review, TB skin tests, background check etc. For applicants on medical tracks, service will give you good general hospital experience and documented volunteer hours.

We have had questions about the Roper St. Francis Healthcare - SCRUBS camp.

Because of the continued unpredictable course of the pandemic, we are unable to plan ahead for group summer activities within our hospital facilities. It is unfortunate and we are saddened.

Welcoming future healthcare providers into our hospitals has been the highlight of our summer for many years. At this time, the only students within our hospitals are those currently enrolled in clinical programs and training to work with patients.

Stay on course. Don't be discouraged. We need good people in healthcare.

Volunteering at the RSFH Vaccine Clinic:

Former/future SCRUBS students (over 18) interested in volunteering at the Roper St. Francis Healthcare vaccine clinic at the coliseum, are invited to contact Joan Perry at [email protected].

The shifts are full day from 7:30 am - 4 pm, and we will need to do some processing but what a rewarding role to play.

If you are willing to offer at least 4 full days of service we would love you to touch base. There are different roles - greeter, traffic director, general help etc. The vaccine clinic is in a parking garage at the North Charleston coliseum. This counts as healthcare volunteering.

It's tradition at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital that the manger lay empty until midnight on Christmas Eve. The nightshift nursery nurses carry Him out and lay Him in the manger.

This is a great relief to visitors who call to report that He has been stolen. He is well and being cared for by Mary Beth and Erica.

Career exploration pays off! Former SCRUBS program participant Torie Dingler is in nursing school and employed at Roper St. Francis Healthcare as a patient care technician. Today she is staffing the COVID-19 vaccination clinic for healthcare staff. Thanks Torie!
