Today marks 11 years since the tragic loss of life at Mother Emanuel AME Church. One of the lives lost was Susie Jackson, the namesake of the Susie Jackson Freedom Memorial Garden, which the Conservancy has stewarded since the park’s dedication in 2023.
Susie Jackson was a resident of Alexander Street for more than 50 years, and used the vacant land where her Freedom Memorial Garden now lies as a cut-through to Mother Emanuel AME Church for regular services and Bible study. Ms. Jackson was the eldest victim among the nine people murdered during the attack on a Bible study group at Mother Emanuel in June 2015.
In remembrance of all the victims, the park has 9 Japanese Blueberry trees, 5 Noisette roses to recognize the survivors, and 4 Olive trees to represent the four anchors of peace: “freedom, forgiveness, faith and family.” The garden is meant as a place for tranquility and reflection, especially today.
