Psychology experts had prescribed mental acuity exercises for the eLifespaces’ staff and management. In order for us to maintain our mental sharpness, we must partake in activities that involve memory, focus, concentration, and understanding. And, just like a muscle, the brain can be in shape and function at a high level, or it can be flabby and sluggish.
Therefore, be it resolved that eLifespaces will be closed one-half day on Monday (3/28) for a field trip to view Batman v. Superman. Staff and management believe that such an activity is precisely what the experts have ordered.

Talk about having a bad day! Arrived at the office this morning and railroad crews were bustling about in our parking lot. Immediately, I was looking up the chemical content of the tanker car (identified as 1307 on the warning "flammable" sign). Humorously, this is the same bunch that wants to add MORE tracks next to our building. I think NOT.

We now have "lake/river front" offices. When we built the building, foresight suggested we raise the foundation to that of the railroad tracks (figuring those rail engineers know what they are doing). And yes - they knew what they were doing. While all others around us are wet - we remain dry.

Aftermath of the Emanuel AME Church - lengthy (a manifesto if you will) but I got some things off my chest...

There have been only a handful of events in my lifetime that have shaken my soul to its very essence. The fateful night of June 17th was one of those events. It has taken a week now for the shock, the horror, the depression, and the absolute sorrow to subside momentarily, allowing me, if only for a moment, to glimpse something much grander than ever imagined.

Awed by the very presence of an event more divine than any other encountered in my lifetime, I can only hope to internalize these things in hopes that my golden years will be rich with wisdom and a love for humanity.

The opening of one’s heart and the hearts of many by the nine men and women in that church basement - extending an invitation to a predatory killer to join them in God’s word. Then, rising out of the horror that transpired was Nadine Collier’s testament, “You took something very precious away from me. I will never talk to her ever again; I will never be able to hold her again. But I forgive you. And have mercy on your soul. You hurt me; you hurt a lot of people. But God forgives you, and I forgive you.” The resonance of those words embraced my very soul.

It is shameful to admit, but I do not engage in nearly enough spiritual reading, as I should. But the words of so many of the relatives and parishioners of this church have made me stop, and take heart in Corinthian 13. "If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love."

For years, I have taken a passive, unresponsive demeanor when confronted in a conversation with those who have asserted their ignorance and racial bigotry by subtle, borderline racial (or similar) comments, almost like they were wearing a proud badge of southern dumbass. It is also very sad that because of our history, this heritage that has taught us so much, “outsiders” wish to take aim in an attempt to harm us. The young man that committed these atrocities (choosing not to speak his name) was in his early twenties. This young man was taught, seeded if you will, with a very cancerous mentality that had permeated in the dark crevasses of our state.

Well - no more. No longer can we tolerate this behavior, this ignorance, this disrespect. I apologize for my non-actions in years past. I apologize for allowing this behavior to even exist in my presence. I take pride in Charleston, a town that takes great pride in the actions of a gentleman, the honor of a lady, the existence of manners, the difference between right and wrong, and the caring for fellow mankind regardless of race, sex, religion, age, nationality, disability, or others.

Pastor Clementa Pinckney's prophetic words of over a year ago, “…freedom to be fully what God intends us to be ... sometimes you may have to die” like those before us. Charleston’s Mayor Riley, “that young man thought he was going to divide this community or divide this country with his racial hatred, we are here today and all across America to resoundingly say he measurably failed.”

“There they were in the house of the Lord, studying your word, praying with one another," Rev John Gillison told the congregation. “But the devil also entered. And the devil was trying to take charge.” Then, he added, “the devil cannot take control of your people.”

In the memory of Ms. Hurd, Rev. Pinckney, Rev. Coleman-Singleton, Mr. Sanders, Mrs. Lance, Rev. Middleton-Doctor, Mrs. Jackson, Rev. Simmons, and Mrs. Thompson, forgiveness for this young man’s actions will be slow in its forthcoming; certainly not now, not yet.

Our reactions to their deaths, as tragic as my heart aches for the families, may be a trumpet for what is good in this world; the greatest of which is the ever presence of God’s love. Humbled by those with whom these nine souls lived amongst and with whom they shared their love, they are the very testament of their enlightenment. ~ f
