A walk’s worth of brass underfoot in Downtown Charleston
Orange, Beaufain, Broad, Trapman, Franklin, Legare, Church.
These brass street plaques are set right into the sidewalks all over South of Broad and Downtown Charleston. Most people walk right over them. I cannot stop looking down.

The pineapple is Charleston’s old symbol of hospitality, and you’ll spot it all over the peninsula once you start looking. This stone finial keeps watch over a private courtyard South of Broad, the kind of space tucked just off the street that you’d never know was there. Ivy climbing the brick, working shutters, a little wrought iron, worn pavers underfoot.
These quiet courtyards are one of my favorite parts of living and working Downtown. There’s a whole world behind those garden gates, and I never get tired of it.
