“Custom Built-In” is a phrase often synonymous with “complicated” and “expensive.” However, if you’re willing to get a little creative and work with the space you’re given, the process doesn’t need to be as complicated as you may think. You just need to accept that nothing is square and straight when it comes to the walls in your home.

The project featured here called for a series of shelves concealed by a large hinged door above 3 large drawers. Each are custom fit into (close but not identical) spaces on both sides of a brick fireplace. The doors and drawer fronts were made from 3/4” MDF which the client wanted to paint on their own. The drawers are made from 5/8” maple and installed with 21” soft close undermount drawer slides.

What was once open shelving from floor to ceiling can now function as concealed storage that blends seamlessly into the surrounding space.
