The American Nurses Association just published its first formal principles for virtual nursing. For anyone leading care delivery, the acknowledgment that the problem runs deeper than headcount is the part worth paying attention to.

Workforce capacity and patient acuity are moving in opposite directions. Virtual nursing is one of the few models built to close that gap.

Geography should not determine the quality of care a new mom receives. But in rural America, sometimes it does. One nurse. Six postpartum patients. No float pool. No backup down the hall. Just her, doing everything she can.

Recently, our virtual nurse Lisa Brown, RN, VRN, CAVRN, Dayshift Supervisor traveled for a go-live at a rural mother/baby unit. It was her birthday.

Within the first two hours, she and our Virtual Nursing team supporting the unit remotely helped a Spanish-speaking mom and her newborn through discharge, coordinating interpreter services, walking through breastfeeding education, and completing documentation. Ninety minutes. The bedside nurse spent that time with a new C-section patient.

No new hire. No added headcount. Just a team of nurses who showed up, virtually and in person, and made room for everyone.

An hour before Lisa left, Baby Boy Carter arrived via C-section. She came prepared with a “Birthday Twins” sign. Birthday twin found.

Thank you, Lisa, and to every clinician on our team who shows up like this, every shift. Virtual nursing does not replace the nurse at the bedside. It gives her room to be one.

Joint Commission Accreditation holds healthcare organizations accountable to the highest standards of patient safety and clinical quality.
When you bring a virtual care partner into your care environment, that partner is part of your care team. What they do, and how they do it, reflects on your organization. Accreditation means an independent body has reviewed the clinical processes, safety protocols, and quality standards behind that work and certified them as meeting the same bar your hospital is held to.

VirtuAlly is proud to be one of the first virtual care organizations in the country to earn that designation. We were built at MUSC Center for Telehealth, one of three federally recognized Telehealth Centers of Excellence, and that foundation shows up in how we operate every day for your care teams and patients.

The line between virtual nursing success—and failure

Virtual nursing can — and should — be as unique as each healthcare facility. In our newest blog post, we cover how VN can succeed when it’s implemented early, carefully, and with the partnership of bedside nurses every step of the way. This partnership includes patient outcome accountability, integrated workflows, defined processes, and structured communications.

Myth: Building virtual care in-house gives you more control.

Reality: It often creates more complexity than control.

Building internally means:
- Managing vendor selection, integration, and upgrades
- Developing workflows from scratch
- Owning staffing, training, and adoption challenges

And all of it pulls leadership away from what really matters.

Partnering with VirtuAlly means:
- A proven playbook across multiple health systems
- Technology and clinical teams already built
- Your leadership stays focused on patients and strategy

You don’t lose control.

You gain clarity, speed, and results.

We run the program.
You own the outcomes.

Virtual nursing—beyond cost-cutting

Virtual nursing is so much more than cost-cutting. Using real, experienced nurses, virtual nursing can form partnerships with practitioners on the floor and at the bedside, freeing staff from administrative tasks, reducing burnout and improving healthcare. Our survey last year found Medical University of South Carolina nurses reported these improvements:

89.8% decreased overall workload

82% spent less time on documentation

75% have more time with patients

56% feel better supported

82% value the team nursing approach

Healthcare needs a new care plan.
But unlike traditional nursing, this care plan is for a team.

It’s not about one nurse doing everything.
It’s about the right people doing the right things.

Virtual nursing is changing and enhancing the plans of care team function.
Instead of stretching nurses even more, Virtual Nursing adds a partner who handles what can be done remotely.

And that care plan works for nurses who report:

More time with patients
Less administrative tasks
Less burnout
More job satisfaction

It’s not just a successful care plan. It's a cultural shift.

A mass exodus.

According to a 2024 National Workforce Study, almost 40 percent of nurses plan to leave the profession in the next five years.

What if the solution is a nurse that never steps foot on the floor?

According to nurses at the Medical University of South Carolina, when they have support from a virtual nurse:

89% report a decrease in overall workload
82% spend less time on admission and discharge documentation
75% have more time to spend with patients
56% feel better supported in their roles

A virtual nurse handles what doesn’t require a physical presence so bedside nurses can spend more time doing what does, and the results are eye opening.

Less burnout. Better staff retention. More human connection.

We wrote about how this model is reshaping healthcare, and the numbers are just a small part of the story.

We're headed to ATA NEXUS 2026 in Orlando!

Coming in curious, candid, and ready to challenge a few assumptions about virtual care.

We're especially looking forward to conversations around:
• Scaling without breaking systems
• Designing for real people, not perfect workflows
• Turning momentum into something sustainable

If you’re attending, let’s connect.

As Nurses Week comes to a close, one thing stays with us: nurses are what healthcare runs on.

The skill. The judgment. The dedication. The willingness to show up fully for patients on their hardest days, and then do it all again the next shift.

At VirtuAlly, everything we do is built around one belief: the bedside nurse should never work alone. Our virtual care team exists to extend yours — catching what's easy to miss, escalating before situations become crises, and carrying some of the weight so you don't have to carry all of it.

This week was about celebrating nurses. Every week is about earning the right to stand beside them.
Thank you. 💙
