SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY
Ecclesiastes 12:13 ESV
13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT:
Solomon applied himself to study all that is observable under heaven. Before telling of his lofty efforts, he shares his feeling about the whole matter: “Everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). With that cheerful thought established, he begins his insights. He covers matters including life and death, wisdom and folly, pleasure and toil, time and seasons, wealth and poverty, humanity and nature, and good and evil. In the end, he recommends only one course of action: “Fear God and keep His commandments.” The understanding that this is the duty of all people, however, is not attainable through observation. Solomon could observe what was visible under heaven, but only God could impart knowledge of His expectations. God shares His heart with those who listen to truth. True wisdom comes from knowing Him. Respect and obedience are what He requires.
