Here’s the latest from AZDOT regarding the widening of the south portion of the 202 that starts 8/9/24. Construction is estimated at 2 1/2 yrs. Some good improvements. Expect closures and delays.

Widening of an eight-mile section of Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) between Loop 101 (Price Freeway) and Val Vista Drive is expected to start Friday, Aug. 9th.

The $200 million project will widen Loop 202 to add two general purpose lanes in each direction between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road. In addition, one general purpose lane in each direction will be added from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive.

Other project elements include:
▪️ Widening exit ramps to two lanes;
▪️ Widening bridges to accommodate the new lanes;
▪️ Reconstructing the eastbound Arizona Avenue on-ramp and bridge;
▪️ Adding noise walls in some locations;
▪️ Improving the driving surface by removing the existing top layer of asphalt pavement and diamond grinding the concrete pavement.

Project construction will require freeway, ramp and crossroad closures and restrictions, which will primarily occur during overnight hours and on weekends. Ramps will need to be closed for up to two months for reconstruction.

Construction is expected to take approximately two-and-a-half years to complete. The contract was awarded to a joint venture between Sundt Construction, Inc. and CS Construction, Inc.
