"When teaching the core concepts of Zen philosophy, concrete examples are often employed to lead wayward students toward understanding. But Zen study is not inherently concrete, and the enlightenment that students seek does not lie outside of themselves. Thus, Zen reminds us that truth is not hidden, it is not distant or guarded, but rather, it stands in perpetuity 'right before our eyes.' Zen does not instruct us to search the world for answers, but rather to shed all that is unnecessary, peeling away layers of accumulated thought and compulsion to reveal our true selves, which have always abided within enlightenment.

Natural objects such as mountains, trees, oceans, clouds, and the sun and moon are frequently used by Zen teachers as metaphors to gently nudge students in the right direction, but these objects are not enlightenment themselves. However, if we know how to approach it, anything in the natural world can teach us about ourselves. Even in our modern daily lives, our minds are filled with physical concerns, which serve as distractions. One can look for an object, for example, their eyeglasses.

Because the mind is overflowing with thoughts, they may look for their glasses all over the house, missing that they are in their pocket, or on the desk right in front of them. Zengo such as the above statement are reminders that, complex as it may seem, the world is very simple, and every rock, tree, bird, or even our own eyeglasses can go unseen, if we are looking for it somewhere far away."
