Meet Des! ✨
• 18 Years at Prairie Gardens 💚
• Floral & Candles Floor Manager 🌸
• Former Eastern Star State Officer ⭐
• Lover of Swimming 🏊♀️
• Favorite Season: Spring 🌷
If you’ve spent time in our floral department over the years, chances are you’ve met Des. Des has been part of the Prairie Gardens family for 18 years, starting in the greenhouse before growing into her current role as Floral & Candles Floor Manager.
Her love of swimming started with her dad, who served in the submarine corps. His teaching method? Toss each of the kids into the water and let “sink or swim” take over. Des survived, learned to swim, and still loves being in the water today. 🏊♀️
Growing up in a Navy family also meant plenty of moving. By the age of 13, Des had attended 13 different schools while living near naval bases up and down the East Coast. As the oldest of four siblings, she jokes that she got all the good genes.
When she’s not at Prairie Gardens, Des enjoys meeting new people and staying involved with the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her favorite colors are green, blue, and yellow, and when asked her favorite season at Prairie Gardens, her answer was easy: spring. 🌱

Bees and butterflies, our important Pollinator friends, love baths with little gems or stones to perch on because they provide safe, accessible drinking water — and the shiny gems serve a few surprising purposes too!
🐝 Why Bees Love It:
They Need Water – Bees use water to cool their hive and feed larvae. But they can’t land on open water.
Perching Spots Are Critical – The gems, marbles, or stones give them a safe place to stand so they don’t drown.
Shiny Surfaces Help Attract Them – Bees are drawn to light reflections, especially those that mimic dew or nectar glints.
🦋 Why Butterflies Love It:
They Drink Mineral-Rich Water – Butterflies do something called “puddling”, where they sip from shallow, moist areas to get salts and minerals.
Gems Make the Area More Visible – Bright colors and sparkling stones catch their eye like flowers do.
Warmth – Stones or glass gems absorb heat from the sun, giving butterflies a warm place to rest while they drink.
🌼 Creating Your Own:
Use a shallow dish (like a saucer or pie tin).
Add clean water just below the tops of the gems or rocks.
Place it near flowers or herbs like lavender, zinnias, or milkweed.
Change the water often to avoid mosquitoes.
