Retail Ecommerce Ventures Acquires RadioShack Brand 11/26/2020

Retail Ecommerce Ventures has acquired the brand and related assets for nostalgic electronic retailer RadioShack.

REV aims to revive the brand as an e-commerce portal that will support existing stores carrying RadioShack products. The new brand owner plans to launch a modern RadioShack website at RadioShack.com soon. REV’s deal comes ahead of RadioShack’s 100th anniversary next year.

RadioShack launched in 1921 as a retailer for amateur ham radio equipment. The retailer grew over time to sell various electronics items and components. In 2015, the company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy after experiencing struggling sales and shop closures.

Dayton Hamvention Announces its 2021 Theme — “The Gathering”

“The Gathering” will be the theme for the 2021 Dayton Hamvention®. Hamvention General Chair Rick Allnutt, WS8G, said the theme reflects what has been missing from our lives most of this year.

“We have spent the last 6 months being bound to our houses and small groups,” he said. “We are very optimistic that when May arrives, we will be allowed to get together.”

Allnut, a medical doctor with a master’s degree in public health, said Hamvention management is closely following the coronavirus situation and believes it will improve enough by May that government restrictions on travel and large groups will be relaxed. The Hamvention team will continue to follow developments.

“We hope we will all be able to get together, talk about ham radio, and share the interaction we have missed,” Allnutt said. “The Gathering” theme acknowledges the role that Hamvention plays in amateur radio.

Hamvention 2021 will be held May 21 – 23 at the Greene County Fairgrounds and Expo Center in Xenia, Ohio.

South Pole Radio Contact Spurs Visit To The Bottom Of The World 11/25/2020

Great story about how ham radio can lead to exploring the world.

"Late one night, when I was on the 14-MHz frequency band, my life changed. A ham operator in Antarctica poked weakly through the static. Upon a closer listen, it was clear that not only was he in Antarctica, but at the Amundsen-Scott Station on the geographic South Pole. My heart skipped a few beats. The South Pole! That was about as wild and remote a place as my teenage imagination could conjur up."

California wildfire victims were given 'erroneous' information about fire before it killed them 09/19/2020

California wildfire victims were given 'erroneous' information fire was contained before it killed them.

Two victims of the California wildfires were packed and ready to evacuate the area, but decided to stay at their shared home after reading “erroneous information” about the spread of the fire.

The victims, 68-year-old Philip Ruble and 77-year-old Millicent Catarancuic, were found dead near their destroyed home in Berry Creek, California, last week, after wildfires ravaged areas in the state.

Mr Ruble was found inside a charred Toyota pickup truck by their home, while Ms Catarancuic was discovered in a nearby embankment, according to Butte County sheriff Kory Honea.

An evacuation order was sent out for Berry Creek in the afternoon of Tuesday 8 September and the information was posted on social media sites, the fire information line and was broadcast via ham radio.

Amateur Air Pollution Trackers Are Mapping Western Wildfire Smoke 09/19/2020

Amateur Air Pollution Trackers Are Mapping Western Wildfire Smoke
Using thousands of PurpleAir sensors, a community of tech enthusiasts and health-conscious residents are capturing a real-time portrait of an environmental crisis.

It’s something of a ham radio network of the 21st century, several members said. Like those amateur shortwave radio operators, who tap into official emergency communication lines to assist in calamity, PurpleAir owners are “at the ready in the event of a disaster, supplying data for everyone to view,” said Gary Brickley, a retired union stagehand who runs a PurpleAir sensor and weather station from his hilltop home in San Francisco. There is a fair amount of overlap between the two worlds: Several air quality trackers are also hams, including Dave Pacek, a retired Air Force intelligence analyst who runs a PurpleAir sensor (as well as a seismometer) at his Sacramento home.
