From 1972 to 1986, Iund made significant contributions to the sewing industry while working for Bernina Sewing Machine Company. During this period, he managed the mechanical department, and was responsible for technical training and warranty of Bernina Sewing Machine products at the company’s western U.S. importer in Salt Lake City, Utah. Iund received his training under the tutelage of Swiss fact

ory technicians in Salt Lake City, and also at the Bernina Factory in Steckborn, Switzerland. But his contributions to the sewing industry soon went farther then he could have imagined. In 1982, Iund achieved his first independent sewing development success with a long-arm custom machine that was created to sew carbon laminates for NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. One year later he began to develop and manufacture a line of similar machines for the quilting industry. The Legacy I was the first long-arm artisan, “sit-down” quilting machine introduced to the market. The machine was of extraordinary quality, modeled after the benchmark Bernina 217 and later the 217N. Other Iund designed and built sewing machines are currently used in making sails, wing fabric for hang gliders, flags, aerospace applications, and assorted other industries involved in sewn fabrics and materials. In 1985, Iund was invited to participate in the design review board for the Bernette MO334 and MO335 over-lock machines at Fritz Gegauf AG in Steckborn, Switzerland. This involvement triggered in Iund an enthusiasm to continue and expand his own on-going product design and development efforts. The next year Iund left Bernina to create NIT, Inc. and continue development of specialized long-arm sewing machines. NIT was quickly recognized as a design and prototype operation for many commercial ventures unrelated to machine quilting. NIT has developed products found in the medical device, health and fitness equipment, aerospace, and various other commercial industries. Iund made multiple patents in those industries. In 1998, Iund began work on a new generation of sewing machines that would be more economical to build. He said the manufacture of the Legacy I and II machines was more a “labor of love than a profitable business. The real payback came when my customer friends would share their appreciation for their machines.” In 2005 NIT ceased to manufacture the “Legacy I” quilting and sail making machines because of high manufacturing costs. A 1998 NIT initiative to create new quilting machine concepts was partially realized in 2002. That was the year the first of two mechanical design concepts materialized for the HQ-Sixteen Quilting Machine for HandiQuilter, Inc. HQ-Sixteen development began in July of 2002, and the first operating prototype was available three months later. The rapid product development cycle of the HQ-Sixteen machine was possible because the core technology was already sitting on the shelf at NIT. The second NIT design concept will makes its way to the market place in 2011 and promises to revolutionize the quilting industry. Branded under NIT’s existing Legacy® product line, the design prototype is complete. It will be initially offered in two different variants aimed at the commercial (cottage industry) and industrial markets. More variants may follow as unique industry needs are identified. The new Legacy® line of machines will again provide unsurpassed quality found in previous Legacy® products, with new levels of refinement, performance, and adaptability. NIT has been an innovative leader in the quilting industry since 1984. The company’s continuing effort is to produce the best designs for the marketplace with the highest quality that will benefit artisan users everywhere. A permanent quick-fix for all 1000 series Bernina sewing machines. All you need is:
a. cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) not the gel type
b. Isopropanol alcohol.

This is another printed part from PET plastic with machined brass contact pins. Cost is $30.75 ea. We will have other parts available soon including the long awaited single hole needle plate for quilting.

New parts available from NIT, Inc.
Some of you have problems with the bobbin winder on the 930 Bernina sewing machines, due to the breaking of the blocking or (hand-wheel stop clutch lever).
From the enclosed photos, you will see some mechanical changes that enhance the robustness of the lever which includes printing the lever with a very strong PET plastic over the OEM aging mold injected glass filled nylon lever.

Parts are now available. The cost is $27.25 which includes the coil spring.

Obviously, polyurethane foam packaging is the best method for shipping sewing machines, however the methods shown in the photos have proven 100% effective in my business for 30 years. Pretty inexpensive as well.
*Please send only the machine, bobbin case, hook, and zigzag presser foot.
*You can also send the foot control and cable but only if you have problems with them.
*No portable case, accessories, bobbins,etc, as are not needed and can be lost
*Make an itemized list of problems in case we have overlooked something minor.

After 37 years from the initial discovery of the defective heat treatment thickness on the vertical shaft on 930 series machines, I am finding more and more timing issues caused by the conical timing fixing screw on the Hook Crank. Apparently the same problem existed on late model 830 and 900 Nova's, but it's taken many years to show up. ... The photo of the blunted screw is from a 900 Nova rebuild from Florida. This is easily repaired with a special tool that we have on hand. The tools are available for loan when needed. ... The settings that should be applied on all Bernina Records are: 1. Return Motion @ 2.8 mm with Loop Lift @ 1.8 mm. Note: The 930 book settings are: Return Motion @ 2.3 mm with a Loop Lift @ 1.6 mm, and must be used due to the needle bar decoupling clutch and pinned hole in the needle bar.

Addition: Explanation of why on 930 settings.....
Thereis no needle bar adjustment on the needle bar driver of the 930.
There were however, four needle stop screws with differing diameters to change the needle height.
Since these are no longer available, the 930 settings of (return motion @ 2.8mm) and (loop lift @ 1.6mm) are generally critical for timing.

Shipping Bernina sewing machines to NIT, Inc? Please ask for the "Trick 29-200" pdf instructions for "Boxing and Shipping". Enclosed are the photos showing the general idea without the special precautionary instructions that are important for shipping without damage. ... When shipping, you will always want to keep your container as small as possible because cargo space is very pricey. A 20" L x 12" W, x 16" H box is used as our standard container. The last two machines shipped to NIT were large boxes from Home Depot weighing in at 23 lbs at a cost of $80.00, however the return ship cost from NIT was around $30.00. ... Going to a UPS store is very expensive as UPS stores are privately owned. If shipping via UPS, use the online UPS site to prepare and pay for your shipment. You'll save money.
