The 2008 Cedar Rapids Flood was one of the most devastating natural disasters in Iowa history. The flood was caused by months of unusually wet weather, heavy snowmelt, saturated soils, and intense rainfall across eastern Iowa in June 2008.

Key facts:

The Cedar River crested at 31.12 feet on June 13, 2008, nearly 20 feet above flood stage and more than 11 feet higher than the previous record.
More than 1,100 city blocks (about 10 square miles) were flooded.

Approximately 5,900 homes and thousands of other properties were affected, forcing widespread evacuations.

Damage in Cedar Rapids alone was estimated in the billions of dollars, making it one of the costliest floods in U.S. history.

The flood changed Cedar Rapids forever.
