Here’s an interesting piece of signage history.
Sign permitting has existed for more than 600 years.
One of the earliest known sign regulations dates back to 1389, when King Richard II of England required taverns to hang a sign outside their establishment so inspectors could identify where ale was being sold.
Because many people couldn’t read at the time, businesses relied on visual symbols instead of written names. These signs helped customers recognize the tavern and helped officials monitor the quality of ale being produced.
More than six centuries later, signage still plays the same role — helping people find and recognize businesses.
Even today, great signage still serves the same purpose: helping businesses stand out and be remembered.
