Piano on the sidewalk

"I wanna be where the people are" says any creature with something inside it to be expressed, and the piano breaches onto the sidewalk and weathers the wind and the fleeting Autumn sunlight and the no-muffler truck noises, and waits for the firm fingers of a passerby to reach in and evoke its hidden depths, and where have I climbed but into your arms for you too to play the music out of me.

🎥 .j.a and I rolled out of Nashville to explore the westward highways with my guitar, his camera, and a hard drive filling up with song footage.

But before that, 🎸 hosted us for a session in Nashville.

Duncan's PhD diploma in Physics from UC Santa Cruz hangs on his bathroom wall, from March. His first act as a Doctor was to leave it all behind and move to Nashville to make music. "It seemed like a more direct line to beauty," he said.

Shortly thereafter we met at a show, and then he was playing pedal steel on these songs, raising a gutteral clang and a glittering curve through their lonesome highways. He also recorded and produced the audio for this session.

This song is called Ti i i ime, a REM-state folk song that lives between the tumbledown shack of mortality and the river of dreams. Perhaps it's fetching water from the river or carrying the thirsty out of the shack. Maybe it's just a patch of grass inbetween.
