It's been ages since I last posted here. In the meantime, I've had two more children, one of whom is also autistic, my marriage fell apart (plot twist!), and somewhere along the way I found myself sitting through an entire autism evaluation of my own.

And guess what? It turns out that I'm not only ADHD (combined type, of course, because I am), but also autistic.

I wasn't totally shocked, but I was surprised at how many feelings came rushing back. There was relief, confirmation, a little sadness, and a WHOLE lot of "Ohhhh… that makes so much sense." You start to watch your entire life on rewind, but now you have closed captions turned on and suddenly they all make sense.

Being neurodivergent and Black is… a whole thing. A lot of us were misdiagnosed, underdiagnosed, or diagnosed with the catch-all category label of "gifted but lazy," "too sensitive," or my personal favorite: "attitude problem." Turns out it was just undiagnosed executive dysfunction and sensory overwhelm. Who knew?

This diagnosis is a permission slip and a mirror. I've spent years advocating for neurodivergent kids and adults, including my son—and now I get to show myself the same kindness.

I'm sharing this for the women like me who've lived their entire lives fitting in, concealing, and raising whole families while attempting to figure out why life was just a little bit harder all the time. You weren't broken. You weren't losing it. You were out here raw-dogging neurodivergence with no script.

This local news story is heartbreaking. 5 year old Karter was non speaking and autistic. His father allegedly killed him after he wet the bed. The family has set up a go fund me to raise funds for the funeral.
